Fungus specifically targets mosquitoes, is safe for humans and other insects Malaria kills nearly half a million people every year, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). In some of the hardest-hit areas in sub-Saharan Africa, the mosquitoes that carry the malaria parasite have become resistant to traditional chemical insecticides, complicating efforts to fight the disease. A new study from the University of Maryland and colleagues from Burkina Faso, China and Australia suggests that a mosquito-killing fungus genetically engineered to produce spider and scorpion toxins could serve as a highly effective biological control mechanism to fight malaria-carrying mosquitoes. The fungus […]

Geomarketing is a concept that is gaining importance within the business environment. Even though  its essence is nothing new, due to the advances in GIS technology and the ones in displaying massive amounts of data -BIG Data or Data Science-, it has become a revolutionary tool for making strategic decisions. Let´s get started. Making strategic decisions requires to manage large amounts of information and in many cases, the volume is that big that it becomes difficult to handle. As a result, the decision-making process loses quality. Geomarketing refers to the analysis of that information according to the geographic situation of […]

Determining where and when wildfires could strike could help save lives and keep precious forestland from burning down. Satellites can help track wildfires and their progression, but they can’t always help determine where a wildfire will spread to or how fast it will go. GISLounge reports that a new technology called the Firelight Detection Algorithm, or FILDA which can help detect wildfires at night even when the skies are cloudy has been developed. FILDA can detect wildfires even when they are very small, which can help firefighters better coordinate their efforts. Traditional fire detecting methods use Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer […]
